LESSON 7 The Infinitive: basic points A. Verb + to infinitive In most cases we use the infinitive with ‘to’: ▪ I want to have a rest. ▪ It’s necessary to plan carefully. ▪ My brother expects to find a job soon. B. Note the negative: not to + infinitive: ▪ I promise not to be late. ▪ We decided not to go out because of the weather. |
The Verb “to have” A. Have – have got ‘Have’ and ‘have got’ mean the same thing (possession, relationships, illnesses etc. ) We can normally use either form. But ‘have got’ is more informal. Got-forms are not generally used to talk about habits and repeated actions. Note that we don’t use ‘have got’ in short answers:
